Barter in Blood POSTMORTEM

How much will you sacrifice? This game was created for Ludum Dare 44 with the theme “Your Life is Currency”. This game was one of my first ever game jam submissions, and if you’re unfamiliar with Ludum Dare, the idea is to create a game completely from scratch – art, music, design, in one weekend. It’s really fun because then everyone plays and gives feedback on each other’s games and you get to see how well you rank. After creating Cave Escape, I wanted to try a Shoot Em Up Roguelike game. The hook for this game was making a contract with the devil exchanging health for better weapons to beat the enemies in each level.

 Doing a game jam of making a game in such a small time period when you are new to making games in Unity is a big jump and resulted in a number of issues for the game. There was no way to restart or skip the intro cut scene, no interesting level design or multiple types of enemies, and just horrible graphics all around. But I would highly recommend everyone tries it anyway. 

 Because game jams aren’t about creating the most fun games or polished projects, they are the best place to try wacky ideas, learn something new and just finish something. And then when people play it, you’ll get a lot of feedback and learn a lot about what went well and what could be done better. I went back and fixed a lot of the issues based on player feedback and while it is just an endless 2d top down shooter of one type of enemy that rushes toward you, I’m pretty proud of it for one of my first games made.
