Full Game Map + Devlog !


Missed the deadline to submit this to the Blackthorprod game jam … whoops. Two major lessons learned from this: don’t wait until the last ten minutes to submit your game. Always give time for unexpected bugs and plenty of playtesting to find those bugs. Two, make sure your game is actually submitted. I thought hitting the ‘create a new game’ button when I clicked on the submit a project would automatically submit it, but no, you have to go back after creating the game page, and submit it. I only realized this 7 minutes after the deadline, so saving more time to submit would’ve also been greatly helpful. Because I missed the deadline, I spent a few days finishing it up and adding new features.

Because I’m not skilled with art, I took the jam’s theme of “Less is More” to create a metroidvania with an extremely minimal tileset. I also wanted to get more practice with the Unity particle system and make a game with minimal graphics but incredible polish. 

My original idea was way overscoping the jam - I tend to have an issue with that. I essentially thought - what if I made Hollow Knight, but with these minimal graphics. I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish though in just 1.5 weeks, it feels like a huge world with 2 extra lives you can find, 4 different abilities, and coins that incentivize exploration and fighting the enemies (which have incredibly predictable AI, but hey there’s numerous different versions). 

One issue I wasn’t able to fix was the coin particles sometimes going inside walls, so if you have any suggestions about that, let me know !
